This project was done as a part of our Typography course in Semester 3. We had to create a non latin typeface for running text. This non latin typeface had to be derived from an existing latin typeface that had been developed in the past five years.
I chose Malayalam because I am not familiar with this language. Thus trying to replicate the latin typeface would be a challenge and also a lot of fun. This was also a way to help me learn a new language.
The Latin typeface that I chose is Magasin made by Laura Mesegeur in 2013. It is a wavy script display typeface. It was published in “Our favourite typefaces of 2013″ byTypographica. I chose this typeface because of the stark contrast, the wavy shapes, loops and drops.

Digitizing the derived forms led to learning two new softwares. I've enjoyed working on Magasin Malayalam immensely and look forward to doing more typeface design projects.
